The History of Don Quixote
In this first volume I set forth the history of a gentleman of La Mancha, poor in fortune yet rich beyond measure in imagination, who, having filled his mind with books of chivalry, resolved to restore to the world an order it had long forgotten. Thus Don Quixote sallies forth in armor more ancient than useful, with a heart more noble than prudent, taking inns for castles, windmills for giants, and common roads for the fields of everlasting glory. Yet beneath his errors there lives a strange dignity; for though the world laughs at him, it is not always certain that the world is wiser. Here begins the journey of madness and honor, laughter and melancholy, illusion and truth. And if the knight is ridiculous, he is also human; for every man, in some secret chamber of the soul, has mistaken his dream for reality and ridden bravely toward it. -------------- En este primer volumen puse la historia de un hidalgo de la Mancha, pobre de hacienda y riquísimo de imaginación, el cual, habiendo llenado el entendimiento de libros de caballerías, determinó volver al mundo una orden que ya parecía perdida. Así sale don Quijote con armas más antiguas que provechosas, y con ánimo más noble que cuerdo, tomando ventas por castillos, molinos por gigantes y caminos ordinarios por campos de perpetua gloria. Mas debajo de sus yerros vive cierta dignidad extraña; porque, aunque el mundo se ríe de él, no siempre queda claro que el mundo sea más sabio. Aquí comienza el viaje de locura y honra, de risa y melancolía, de engaño y verdad. Y si el caballero mueve a burla, también mueve a compasión; pues todo hombre, en algún aposento secreto del alma, ha tenido su sueño por realidad y ha cabalgado valeroso hacia él.
