The History of Don Quixote
In this second volume Don Quixote returns to the road, but now the world has heard of him before he arrives. His fame goes ahead of his horse, and men who should have learned pity instead prepare tricks, spectacles, and mockeries for the knight and his faithful squire. Sancho Panza, with his belly full of proverbs and his heart fuller than he himself suspects, walks beside his master not merely as servant, but as witness, companion, and mirror. Between the knight’s lofty madness and the squire’s earthly wisdom there arises a friendship more truthful than many sober philosophies. Here the adventures grow more subtle, and the laughter more sorrowful. For when men mock a dreamer, they reveal not only his folly, but their own poverty of spirit. And so the tale asks whether it is better to see the world as it is, or to ennoble it by believing, even mistakenly, that it might be greater. ---------------- En este segundo volumen vuelve don Quijote al camino; mas ya el mundo sabe de él antes que él llegue. Su fama camina delante de Rocinante, y los hombres, que pudieran haber aprendido piedad, disponen burlas, fingimientos y teatros para el caballero y su fiel escudero. Sancho Panza, con el vientre lleno de refranes y el corazón más lleno de lo que él mismo entiende, va junto a su señor no sólo como criado, sino como testigo, compañero y espejo. Entre la alta locura del caballero y la sabiduría terrena del escudero nace una amistad más verdadera que muchas filosofías cuerdas. Aquí las aventuras se hacen más sutiles, y la risa más amarga. Porque cuando los hombres se burlan de quien sueña, descubren no sólo la locura ajena, sino también su propia pobreza de espíritu. Y así se pregunta esta historia si es mejor ver el mundo como es, o ennoblecerlo creyendo, aunque sea con yerro, que pudiera ser más alto.
