Marius
Marius is the story of a young man awakening — to history, to poverty, to love, and to the contradictions of his own heart. Raised beneath the influence of a rigid grandfather, Marius grows up separated from the memory of his father and from the political passions that shaped another generation. When he begins to uncover the truth about that father, the world he thought he understood starts to fracture. Loyalty, inheritance, family, and conviction no longer seem simple. He leaves comfort behind and enters a harsher Paris: rooms without heat, streets full of hunger, men driven by desperation, and ideas sharp enough to divide families and nations. There he encounters the Friends of the ABC, young republicans who believe that history can be pushed toward justice by courage, sacrifice, and revolt. And then there is Cosette. Love enters Marius’s life with the force of revelation. What begins as a distant fascination becomes the center of his existence. Yet Hugo does not allow love to float apart from the world. Around Marius and Cosette stand poverty, crime, politics, memory, and the approaching barricades of Paris. Marius is a volume about becoming conscious. It follows a young man as private feeling collides with public history, and as romantic hope is tested by duty, suffering, and political unrest. It asks how a person becomes himself when everything inherited — family, belief, class, and loyalty — must first be questioned.
