Madame Bovary

by Gustave Flaubert

J’annonce aujourd’hui Madame Bovary. » Today I announce Madame Bovary. This is not the story of a monstrous woman, nor of an exceptional woman. Perhaps it is something more troubling: the story of an ordinary woman imprisoned by dreams she was taught to mistake for life. Emma Bovary searches for happiness as one searches for a sentence in a bad novel. She wants love, beauty, luxury, excitement, the absolute — and finds only provincial life, debt, boredom, lies, and human mediocrity. I did not wish to judge Emma. I wished to show her. In this book there is marriage, adultery, money, vanity, religion, medicine, drawing rooms, shops, ready-made phrases, grand illusions, and small acts of cowardice. Above all, there is that old and still modern illness: desiring an imaginary life more than the real one. Read Madame Bovary slowly. Not only to ask: “What is she guilty of?” but also: “Who taught her to dream this way?” — Gustave Flaubert
