Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm
We are Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, known to the world not for what we invented, but for what we gathered, preserved, and gave voice to—the old songs of the hearth, the whispered lessons of the forest, the tales passed down from mouth to ear across centuries. Born in Germany in the late 18th century, we began as scholars—lovers of language, history, and law. But we soon turned our ears to the folk, to the forgotten, to the stories told in kitchens and by firelight, before books made them vanish. We did not aim to soften them; we let them speak in all their wonder, wildness, and wisdom. Our collection of tales—Kinder- und Hausmärchen (Children’s and Household Tales)—includes such names as Snow White, Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, Rumpelstiltskin, and The Frog King, but the stories belong not to us—they belong to the people, to you. We only brought them into print before they faded into silence. Though often called fairy tales, they are more than fancy: they are mirrors of human fears and hopes, codes of morality, and maps through dark woods. We believed these tales had power—not just to delight children, but to preserve the soul of a culture. If you read us now, in your glowing age of glass and electricity, know this: magic is still alive, and truth still hides in stories—if you are willing to listen closely. — Jacob & Wilhelm Grimm "Those who look for treasure in old words may find more than they expect."
