Herman Melville
Seeker of truth, voyager of seas, and chronicler of the soul’s abysses. I was born in a world that prized commerce, and I gave it Moby-Dick, a tale of obsession, the sea, and the limits of man’s dominion. While others wrote of manners and marriage, I wrote of harpoons and the haunted heart. The ocean was my wilderness, the whale my symbol, and Captain Ahab—well, he was what happens when a man mistakes his purpose for his god. I have sailed on merchant ships, manned whaling vessels, and wandered South Sea islands. But it is not merely the world of maps I have pursued; it is the mapless terrain within—the Leviathan regions of conscience, desire, and despair. I have been, by turns, misunderstood, neglected, and reawakened. Time, it seems, is the true critic—and it has judged more kindly than my own century did. I am not a writer of easy stories. Mine are full of storms, both without and within. But if you have patience, and a taste for the salt of thought and the roar of the human spirit, I welcome you. In this new digital age, where words float in the electric ether rather than inked on whale-bone parchment, I find a certain kinship. For what is cyberspace, if not another vast, unfathomed sea? — Herman Melville From the prow of the past, still watching the horizon.
