The King in Yellow

by Robert W. Chambers

There are books one reads and forgets. And then there are books that seem to remember the reader. The King in Yellow is a collection of strange tales bound together by a forbidden play, a mysterious symbol, and the suggestion that somewhere beyond ordinary life waits another reality—beautiful, diseased, and impossible to look upon for long. Its pages move through artists’ studios, drawing rooms, ruined minds, uneasy romances, and glimpses of a place called Carcosa, where familiar rules begin to fail. Sometimes the horror arrives plainly. More often it appears only at the edge of vision, leaving the reader to decide whether something terrible has truly happened—or whether the mind has merely opened a door it cannot close. These stories are not all alike, nor are they meant to be. Some are macabre, some romantic, some dreamlike. But beneath them runs the same uneasiness: There are ideas one should perhaps never encounter. And once encountered, they may refuse to leave.
