The Importance of Being Earnest: A Trivial Comedy for Serious People
I have endeavored to treat all serious things with the levity they deserve, and all trivial things with the solemnity by which society so often preserves itself from thought. Here are gentlemen who invent names in order to escape duties, ladies who fall in love with syllables, guardians who confuse morality with furniture, and a handbag which proves more powerful than ancestry. No one is quite what he appears to be, and yet everyone is exactly what society has trained him to become. It is a play of manners, masks, engagements, cucumber sandwiches, and the beautiful absurdity of being respectable. If it contains a moral, I trust it is sufficiently well hidden; for nothing ruins comedy so thoroughly as an explanation, except perhaps earnestness itself.
