In this book I wished to portray a family not remarkable by outward fate, but terrible by the nakedness of its truth. A father, coarse and shameless, has squandered not only his life but the very idea of fatherhood; and around him stand his sons, each bearing within himself a different answer to the same tormenting question: how shall man live when faith, desire, reason, and conscience tear him in opposite directions? Dmitri burns with passion and guilt; Ivan is consumed by a mind that dares to summon God Himself before the tribunal of human suffering; Alyosha seeks love, humility, and living faith where others see only shame and ruin. Yet none of them stands apart from the sin of the house, for blood speaks even when the soul refuses to hear it. This is a story of fathers and sons, freedom and responsibility, rebellion and faith, crime and judgment. But above all it asks whether man can bear the burden of his own freedom — and whether love may yet remain when reason has despaired and justice is powerless. ------------- В этой книге я хотел изобразить семейство не замечательное по внешней судьбе своей, но страшное обнажённостью своей правды. Но более всего она спрашивает: может ли человек вынести бремя собственной свободы — и останется ли любовь там, где разум уже отчаялся, а правосудие бессильно.
