The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
This tale, dear reader, concerns a boy—though not the kind you’d trust with your pocket watch, nor your pie. Tom Sawyer is a lad of exceptional energy, questionable morals, and first-rate imagination, who spends his time dodging school, pursuing mischief, and occasionally performing acts of accidental nobility. It is not a solemn book. There are no kings, no wars, and very little arithmetic. It is, rather, a truthful portrait of a time when boys fished without licenses, told lies without remorse, and kissed girls only when caught. You will find within it murder, treasure, piracy, whitewashing, Sunday school, and other crimes against propriety. The characters are real enough—they are all stolen from life—and if any townspeople believe themselves misrepresented, they are welcome to file their grievances with the nearest fence in need of painting. This book is intended principally for the entertainment of boys and girls—and for the grown-ups who remember being such, and wish to commit the sin again. If you find virtue in it, well, that’s your affair. I didn’t put it there.
