Crime and Punishment
In this book I wished to show not merely a crime, nor merely its punishment, but the hidden tribunal which begins in the soul long before the court has spoken. A young man, poor, proud, wounded by the injustice of the world and by the torment of his own thoughts, dares to ask whether a human being may step over blood for the sake of an idea. He imagines himself strong; he wishes to test whether he belongs among those who obey, or among those who permit themselves everything. But no theory can silence the living conscience. No clever reasoning can save a man from the face of the one he has destroyed, nor from the gaze of those who still love him. This is a story of sin, fever, humiliation, compassion, and the terrible freedom of the human soul. It asks not only who is guilty, but whether the guilty man can be reborn. ------------------ В этой книге я хотел показать не одно только преступление и не одно только наказание, но тот тайный суд, который начинается в душе человека прежде всякого земного суда. Это повесть о грехе, горячке, унижении, сострадании и страшной свободе человеческой души. Она спрашивает не только о том, кто виновен, но и о том, возможно ли виновному воскреснуть.
